Meet the Maker

Hi, I’m Jasmin, the maker behind Wild Root Studio.

I’ve spent much of the last decade making things.

My creative work has taken many forms over the years — from dog collars, leads, jerseys and coats to clothing, macramé, hemp linen pieces, cycling caps, sewn rope baskets, embroidered animal dolls, soft sculptures and collage.

Some of these creative pursuits grew into successful small businesses, with my work finding its way to customers both locally and internationally. Each one introduced me to different materials, techniques, and ways of making. But through all of it, one thing has remained fairly consistent: I’ve always wanted to make things with my hands.

I love learning how materials behave. I like figuring things out, experimenting, making mistakes, and discovering where an idea might lead next.

Today, that curiosity has brought me to handmade paper, collage, and bookbinding.

I make my paper in a very unglamorous collection of improvised equipment — including kitty litter trays (Unused) and repurposed frames — and I rather like that it began this way. I’m interested in the possibilities of the material, not in becoming a paper mill.

For me, handmade paper is often a starting point. I love creating my own surfaces: building colour and texture, tearing, layering and collaging pieces together, then turning those surfaces into one-of-a-kind book covers. The paper becomes part of the object rather than simply the product itself.

Alongside this, I continue to explore collage in different forms. My digital work tends towards surreal collage, while my physical work is more abstract, tactile and material-driven.

Wild Root Studio is where these different threads of my creative life come together.

It’s a place for handmade paper, handbound books, collage, experimentation and whatever material curiosity leads me to next. Maybe that will eventually include paper clay, colour, sculpture, or something I haven’t discovered yet.

What I Make

Wild Root Studio is a mixed-media practice centred around paper, collage and handbound books.

I make my own handmade paper from recycled materials, then use it in collages, covers, cards and books. I’m interested in what happens when colour, texture, scraps and structure are allowed to interact rather than being planned too precisely.

Some pieces begin with the paper. Others begin with a binding, a collection of scraps, or simply an idea I want to try.
